Reading Challenge

Why is reading important?

Numerous studies show that reading for pleasure has a huge impact on children’s educational performance. In addition, evidence suggests that children who read for pleasure not only perform better at assessments, but also develop a broader vocabulary, enhanced general knowledge and a better understanding of the world around them. In fact, reading is more likely to determine whether a child progresses in school than their social or economic status.

At Lynch Hill, we want every child to be a reader and to derive pleasure from reading. After reviewing all aspects of reading, we made the decision to get rid of reading records and instead are introducing reading scrapbooks. This is a blank notebook, that the children can use in a variety of ways to record things about reading.

It could include...

  • Pictures of their favourite book’s front cover
  • Sharing their favourite part of the book
  • Suggesting who else might like to read this book
  • Writing the blurb
  • Describing how it made them feel
  • Creating new illustrations for the book
  • A parent writing what the child liked best or even disliked about the book
  • Staff recording comments about the books/ conversations about the books the children have read.

In addition to the reading scrapbooks, a variety of reading challenges are planned and offered to the pupils each term.

What difference can I make as a parent?

It is incredibly vital for young readers to hear stories being read to them. This allows exposure to a wide range of words and new sounds, which will help them build their own vocabulary and improve their understanding of word structure. You can play an important role in helping to keep them interested in books, by spending some time reading books together and encouraging them to read to you as well.

Please help us support this reading journey through regular reading at home.
